Short-tailed Field Vole

Microtus agrestis

Short-tailed field voles in particular are a major food source for owls, birds of prey in general, mustelids and snakes.

The voles basically need tussocky grass and thatch to burrow through.

Soft rush is good too, as well as lots of cover and vegetation to burrow into and under.

They don’t thrive in short grass or short wildflower meadows, so bear this in mind when managing grassland.

If you want lots of voles, and the predators that depend on them, then you need long grass.
